Norfolke Trayned Bandes

I think I'm turning gweilo-ish...

...I really think so...

At this rate, I won't even count as a banana any more!

It wasn't that long ago that I was 6 days into a week long trip to Malta without thinking to put on sunblock and without consequences.

Then, over the weekend, along with a bunch of other Norfolkes, I went to a Rawdon's training bash in a field behind a pub in Hantshire. And I got a mildly burned nose. WTF?! Strange then to also wake up to frost on the outside of the tent too but this we blamed on the lack of aircraft and hence contrails :-)

Still, aside from that (Mrs Lincoln), it was a fun weekend. Not actually that heavy on the training (but we did burn off our share of gunpowder), goodly amount of beer drinking - we managed to drink the pub out of all its decent beer by Saturday evening (Courage doesn't count!)!

The key revelation of the weekend during one of the talks/theory sessions was that, far from being ragtag militia scum, Trayned Bandes like the Norfolke Trayned Bandes were, in fact, at least semi-posh as you had to be a landowner or son of one to join. Quite a shock then to learn that the NTB was supposed to be a bunch of middle-class part-time soldiers. aeshna_uk pointed out somewhat later when I told her about this that we are, in fact, largely a bunch of middle-class part-time (pretend) soldiers...

The other highlight was seeing the NTB pike block take on and indeed push back almost twice their number of Rawdons! ("Why have we stopped? Why are we moving backwards?") :-) It turned out that the NTB pike block had signficantly more years collective experience than their opponents (well over a hundred yeards between the four of them!)!

Lastly, seems various Norfolkes are talking about a trip to Vietnam. This could be interesting...

FAO crippsy_99

One set of pictures from Malaysia which might be of especial interest to crippsy_99, taken at a massive megastore near Shah Alam. The thing that struck me most was a strange sense of bewildered familiarity. Wonder if my Clubcard would have worked there? ;-)

aeshna_uk and I then had the thought that Tesco seemed to be shaping up to be a modern day East India Company!

RSF Unity

RSF-Malaya connections?

One for Redemption 2009 attendees and Doctor Who geeks:

I went to the National Monument in KL today with aeshna_uk, doing the touristy thing and suddenly realised the Federation of Malaya crest included the English motto "Unity is strength" (ie the RSF/Party slogan from the Who story Inferno)!

I'd never twigged as the current Federation of Malaysia crest has that motto in Malay (but it still says the same thing).

Coincidence? You tell me? :-)
Goddammit!

Key learning from last night's post-fencing drink and chat: The safest answer to "Do you play rugby?" is "No", not "Not since I was 12"

You'd think, after watching the final episode of Blake's 7 God only knows how many times, I'd already have known that. Especially when talking to someone who knows you do pike and what that means... The other guys have informed me he is unlikely to let up now.

Neil Roberts on Facebook

OK, that was unexpected. I appear to have a Facebook friends request from Neil Roberts. We have 36 mutual friends but I can't help wondering, if this person is for real, why is he sending me an invite? Isn't this breaching some sort of fandom demarcation or etiquette rules?

Is my Sky+ developing sentience?

So, just before episode 1 of Bonekickers, everything (all channels) went blank.

Then, the recording of episode 2 had corrupt, stuttering audio.

Then, I discovered that there was now a Military History channel but, just before a programme on the English Civil War was about to start, the channel (and just that channel) went blank.

Must admit, it does rather have a point re: Bonekickers though...
