I appear to have no hot water. Boiler comes on, radiators warm up but water never gets above lukewarm at best (and only when central heating is on). I assume therefore the circulating pump's gone. Now, to find a suitable engineer.

Guess showers are going to be bracing for a few days...

First thing, find a big screwdriver and loosen screw in middle of circulation pump ... it's an impeller pump, and if a big enough air bubble gets that far, the pump spins (and gets very hot) but no water circulates ... releasing air from pump may be enough to fix it.

Be glad you have some lukewarm water. Mind you, cold water showers are supposed to be character building.

Did you hear about the masochist who liked a cold shower every morning?

So he had a warm shower every morning.

Ha bloody ha, I hear you reply through chattering teeth… Let’s hope the engineer arrives before the pneumonia does!

I had a very similar problem, and it turned out to be the "diaphragm" in the boiler. It cost me a fortune to get repaired, but it may be worth pointing out that this may be the reason so that the repair person brings a diaphragm with them. They'll also need to know the make and model of the boiler.
