...although I now have a phone interview tomorrow, a face-to-face one in Chester on Tuesday and, thanks to some gladhanding and networking at a social/mass gaming event last night, I owe someone a CV and another guy said he wants to talk further...Detling
Big multi-period event down in Kent over the August Bank Holiday weekend. I was down there with Norfolkes but also ended moonlighting for Modern Forces
, the MACV-SOG guys I met at Beltring. Amusingly, I also bumped into Jason, the Filipino Panzer Lehr guy from Beltring, who was also hanging out with them. Alas, we were never there at the same time! There did seem to be a fair bit of moonlighting going on - seemed that half of Rawdon's were also doing WWI Russians.
It was amusing, though, to see the expressions of suprise from people used to only seeing me in ECW kit seeing me in the Vietnam gear and vice-versa, including one of the WWII British Paras from Kelmarsh :-)
All in all, it was a lot more fun that Kelmarsh mainly, I suspect, due to the organisers being rather less anal than English Heritage. Did two days of musket and one of pike. Looking back, doing pike on the last day probably wasn't the smartest move but, hey, it was fun to get back to pike.
One other highlight was miniosiris
joining us for the Sunday and the Monday. Looks like we may have a recruit for next season!
I did of course do a *bit* of shopping - some AUSCAM material (I am going to get round to doing the camo duvet covers, honest!) and a Jing Gong AUG A3. The dealer was selling it off cheap because the single shot isn't working properly but I have a fairly good idea what the problem is and, besides, I could pay what he was asking just for the rail setup alone! I had my UKARA ID all ready but the guy said "You're obviously a re-enactor so that's OK". Well, I was in kit only it's not obvious why an English Civil War re-enactor would need an AUG... :-) Still, it is true the VCRA regs say only you have to be a skirmisher or re-enactor. Nothing about the RIF being appropriate to the re-enacted period ;-) Alas, lack of ration packs though - seems the MOD has been cracking down due to a couple of container loads recently going missing...UNIT - Shadows of Futures Past
Another UNIT-themed lasertag live role-playing game, this time up near Macclesfield. One this time was we were playing new UNIT, complete with black outfits and red berets. Well, that was the plan anyway - several of the regulars revolted and insisted on playing classic UNIT. Should have joined them. One of the NPCs playing a Yeti said he couldn't see shit out of the outfits, except for our red berets! It's a sad moment when you realise that even the Torchwood players were better camouflaged in the forest than you are...
Still, that aside, it was a very enjoyable weekend. The new AUG worked very well (it's kind of embarassing that I passed it to Phil to get tagged up almost a year ago...) and great game. Just no more red beret UNIT. Ever.
One odd little footnote: as we were packing up to go home, another of the NPCs came up to introduce himself. He said we'd never met but when talking with others, my name came up in relation to several different geeky activities! Not entirely sure this is a good thing...
