Spent the weekend at Royal Gunpowder Mills at a small muster organised by Rawdon's Regiment
. The battles were a damned sight more fun than Kelmarsh's. Despite this supposedly being a much smaller event, I'm sure the field was about the same size as the one at Kelmarsh so much more room to maneuver and fire off much more powder too!
One odd thing though: We (Norfolkes) found ourselves on the Royalist side, along with Rawdon's, while Blackwell's (Royalist regiment) was on the Parliamentary side. I know there were reasons for this (to balance numbers etc) but it still felt weird being a Royalist. At one point on Saturday, someone in our musket block asked "Do you know any Royalist cries?" Me: "Er... More Bishops, More Popery...?"
Fun party on Saturday night too, with the theme of Law and Disorder. I did my usual lazy assed costume thing and dug out the orange LA County Prison jumpsuit but quite a few people assumed it was a Guantanamo Bay outfit just because of the colour! The party was located deep in the site in a clearing because of complaints from the neighbours in previous years. Got to wonder what they were expecting given they were living next to a place called Gunpowder Mills! Fun bash marred only by some jackass who seemed to think it was fun to shoot people with an airsoft BB gun. I got hit in the back of the head once and if I'd managed to figure out who it was, I would definitely have had some words with him/her...
A couple of fencing friends came along to watch on Saturday too (Lesley from Poly and Catherine from Saxon). They seemed to enjoy the day, hope we can recruit them :-)
Alas, I suspect I won't make it to next muster at Sturminster Newton on August 15-16 as I'm likely to be on my way to the Philippines that weekend so I suppose next one for me will be the Detling Military Odyssey
for which I've also received mail from the MACV SOG guys about doing stuff with them there. I asked our membership secretary and she said, as long as I show up at drill and battles, that would be no problem.
