Emerging from the bunker...

Yes, I know I've gone an extraordinarily long time without posting anything. No real excuses other than sheer laziness. That and having been absorbed by City of Heroes! Otherwise, work's been way too notable by its absence, been mostly fencing, skirmishing and playing too much City of Heroes.

Embarassingly, the one thing that tore me away from Paragon City was the release of GTA San Andreas for the PC! San Andreas is definitely much more advanced and complex than GTA 3 and Vice City. And yet, in some ways I found it less gripping than Vice City and I suspect a large part of it is due to the setting. What can I say, 80s rock just appeals more to me than 90s rap and hip-hop! Also thought the game's getting possibly a tad too detailed ie need to eat from time to time but too much fast food and/or too little time in gym makes you fat, girlfriends need to be taken out for dinner, drinks and dancing etc!

Other recent things:

Been fencing in the London League. It's a foil team event - teams of three. Foil has not been my main weapon for a long, long time. A sure sign the club has a motivation problem - that I am the third best foilist they can get who will show up...

Got roped into doing an interview on the games industry for the World Service a few weeks back. All started with my being CCed on an email exchange by an ex-colleague. Next thing I know, they want me down at Bush House that afternoon! Well, a 10 minute interview turned out to be more 30+ minutes. Embarassingly, some family friends heard the programme but I still haven't. The producer said she'd send me a copy of the programme on CD but it has yet to arrive so I have no idea what/how much they used and just how dumb I sounded...

An ex-colleague invited me round last Tuesday to Sunbury to talk about possible projects there and to "meet the chaps". On the way to lunch, we bumped into the former HR manager at the company we used to work at. Then, on top of that, I have subsequently learned one of my sister's friends also works there as is a guy I used to deal with extensively at my first job. Small bloody world yet again...

Went last Thursday to Alton Towers with Kate and Neil from fencing and some of Kate's English Civil War re-enactment pals. Even mid-week, the queues for some of the flagship rides are mind-boggling. Kate's now proposing an overnight return trip...

Been inspired by the recent series of Doctor Who to get started on producing prop posters and flyers for our UNIT-themed week at the military vehicle/history show at Beltring. Done some Wanted posters (ie the Master etc), enemy recognition guides, UNIT scientific advisor recognition guides and so on. Suggestions for other things welcome. It's been fun firing up the DTP software again. Been way too long...

Off on Thursday to Malta for the Malta Open fencing competition and a week's holiday. Main concern is that, if I feel this shattered in London temperatures after fencing epée, God only knows what doing foil (dumb move I know but it seemed like a good idea when Kate suggested it in the pub - men's foil and women's epée and vice versa are on the same day) and epée in Malta will do to me. Still, at least I managed to find us some Templar-style red splayed cross patches and looking forward to completing the exploration of the Knights of St John and World War II sites...
