No non-obvious spoilers bar character names but, just in case...

Quintus? Caecilius? Metella?! ln pre-eruption Pompeii?! Weren't they characters in the Cambridge Latin series of pamphlet text books? God, I've got painful memories of them...

Common names, my dear fellow, common names.

I did like the bit where anyone trying to speak Latin was rendered in Welsh by the TARDIS translation circuits.

True, but both the books *and* the programme had

Father=Caecilius
Mother=Metella
Teenage son=Quintus
Location=Pompeii
Time=Just prior to Vesuvius' eruption (well, for the first series anyway, Quintus then buggered too to, amongst other places, Britain)!

I really liked that particular joke - and thought the writer was evil for making us wait nearly 10 mins to see if the wife really was called 'Metella'. ACtually, I think Quintus was the slave in the original.

I didn't recognize them myself, the Latin textbooks I had the in the 70's were probably from the 50's ;-)

However, both the Confidential...

and The Episode Commentary ...

confirmed that they did use the names from Cambridge Latin books.
