Advice on buying washing machines

A Better Tomorrow 2
Right, all indications are that, barring a miracle, the washing machine needs replacing. Anyone have any advice on what to look for in a new one?

One galling thing about this is that it means I'll have to come home after just the one day at the muster this weekend. Can't see any other free time available to go appliance shopping for a few weeks...

Bugger.

I rate Miele's whitegoods very highly, usually.

I second that. My folks have nothing but Miele kit and it's done them proud, and the after-sales service is good. When their washing machine malfunctioned, they had it fixed double-quick - and the repair guy made a point of saying how rare it was to actually have to service a Miele machine.

Of course, for the Red Dwarf gag factor, you could always buy a Smeg machine instead...

Keep an eye open for the European Eco label http://www.nef.org.uk/energyadvice/washing.htm which is a higher energy efficiency rating than an A rating.

Most machines sold in the UK are A rated, and it's possible to get quite a bit better than that, but the official labelling scheme breaks down at that point.

You can get appliances over the internet...

Any recommendations for good online retailers?

I bought my fridge from John Lewis and was pleased with the service. They were willing to answer questions over the phone (as there was one detail I couldn't work out from their website - which was very good overall).

They delivered when they said they would.

Alas, I already have a dryer, less than a year old.

Still, assuming they have roughly the same lifespan, that means I should be on the market for a combo unit next replacement cycle ;-)
