Or, recollections on Starfury Serenity 3

Photos uploaded to Yahoo album. Have also uploaded photos from Manila/Philippines there too.

Scarily, my first and possibly only con of the year although lots of people are pressing me to do SG-11 (note: when someone mentions, as an inducement, she'll be wearing she'd be wearing chainmail and leather, maybe enquiring about the possibility of woodland camo or Nintendoflage wasn't the smartest response). Overall, a nice, enjoyable event, seeing lots of people I hadn't seen in ages (picked up a bunch of people's LJ IDs too, all since added to flist, I hope...). Indeed, spent a large amount of time chatting, didn't do any autographs or photoshoots or even any talks on Sunday. Wonder if this is a consequence of there being just 14 episodes and a film.

Rather weird though, a Firefly/Serenity event without Nathan Filion being loud, larger than life and dominating events. Even Sean Maher noted the quietness of Nathan's absence at the start of his first talk!

Sunday morning: my wakeup call comprised a phone call from my sister to wish me Happy Birthday because she'd somehow got it into her head that it was the 19th!

The BSG uniform seemed to be hit: I ended up chatting to lots of people who initially asked for photos and where I'd got it from. One of them does actually want me to email her details of the tailor in Manila! Gah. Need a Galactica event!

The Brigadier also one went down well too, especially in conjunction with Andy's Captain Jack Harkness/RAF one. Also couldn't resist doing the Time Warp, YMCA and Doctorin' the TARDIS (atrociously) in full uniform but was awfully glad to get out of the jacket afterwards! Heh. Even had a girl come up to me twice to tell me "You are *so* hot". Unfortunately, this has to be discounted by the fact that she was barely capable of standing at that point...

On a related note, key learning: if someone comes walking towards you saying you're looking hot, optimal response is probably not to look round to see who she's talking to... Likewise, it's an entertainingly interesting challenge when someone starts a moderately flirty conversation in Cantonese with you and your commands of the language are pretty minimal.

Still with the uniforms, caught up with that couple with even more SF military outfits than me. They were in Aliens Colonial Marines armour, I was in the BSG uniform, so we had a long geeky mutual admiration/envy session. However, I now have URLs for the armour and BDUs so I think I know what my next geeky capex will be!

Got mistaken for Paul Chan. Twice. On successive nights. By the same person. Both times, she staggered up, hugged me and asked how I was. Second time, I asked "You do realise I'm not Paul, don't you?" "Huh?" "You think I'm Paul, don't you?" "Huh?" Did have a very notable odour of booze about me afterwards :-) She's also since PMed me via the Starfury boards to ask if I was the Ming she'd been mistaking for Paul all weeekend!

Anyway, I decided to register for Decalogy next year. Just hope Jerry Doyle won't be the only B5 guest there. I've since been informed by Andy and Heather that I shall be doing Ming the Merciless as part of a Flash Gordon group costume entry. Heh. Probably be worth it just to hear Sean introduce me with "Ming as Ming the Merciless"!

Alas, had to disappear very early on Monday morning as I had work to do and a (first) dinner with UK team and guys from Stockholm in the evening but one pleasant surprise on returning - found a Birthday card and long letter from Ursula, all the way from Sydney. Nice to see she's as scarily efficient and organised as ever!

Happy Birthday.

... I think.

Also, the BSG uniform is spot on.

ThankS, for both Birthday wishes and uniform comment!

There's some things that need attention like the collar rank pips aren't what they should be for the red piping ranks and I'd rather it had a Pegasus or some other ship patch than a Galactica one but it was a good starting point!
19th-Sep-2006 01:57 pm (UTC)
Are you going to treat yourself to something today?

Why would you rather have a Pegasus patch than a Galactica one?
19th-Sep-2006 02:08 pm (UTC)
Oddly enough, my father said I should do that (treat myself to something, that is, not replace the Galactica patch with Pegasus one - that would seriously freak me out). Might take a look at those Colonial Marines armour/BDU sites...

Re: the badges. One of the reasons I favour uniforms for con costumes is, quite frankly, I don't resemble many major characters. Uniforms are conveniently recognisable but anonymous. The rank of the BSG uniform is Tigh's kind of level so a Pegasus or other patch avoids awkward overlaps (ie I can no longer be thought to be trying to be Tigh). Yeah, I know, very weird, that's why it'd be a Nice To Have rather than a Must Have!

Gaeta got promoted. That's your excuse. Even if he doesn't look the slightest bit like you.

Only slightly more difficult than finding short curvy people. They're all skinny.

Ah, I see, that does make sense.

Although do people who dress up at cons ever really look like the people they are dressing up as?
19th-Sep-2006 04:45 pm (UTC)
Well, a fair few of them do. For example, sakara75 and bornof_thenight have done a superb Padme and Trinity, respectively.
19th-Sep-2006 07:49 pm (UTC)
Yup. There's a bloke at the cons who due to a passing resemblance to Johnny Depp, does frighteningly good Edward Scissorhands/Sleepy Hollow/Jack Sparrow/Willy Wonka costumes. Our mate Claire did a fantastic Chiana from Farscape.

Thank you and, yes, I think the USCM is next. Well, I do have the Pulse Rifle, after all...

Happy Birthday *hugs* even if I forgot to buy you that birthday drink in the end :o)

It was great to see you at the weekend, and good to see you partaking in the dancing ;)

Really not sure "good" is the right word to use here!
19th-Sep-2006 08:31 pm (UTC)
Happy Birthday, Hornster!
20th-Sep-2006 09:53 am (UTC)
Thanks but, whoa, steady, entertaining as I think ol' CJ is, I've always thought of myself as more a Nhut than a Hornster!

Thanks. Hmm... I've taken the matter under consideration. Current thinking is most likely I do a Saturday night party reg... For someone whose first con it was last weekend, you're being awfully evangelical about this!

Happy birthday. Just.

The BSG uniform looked great, but I don't think I'm up to a trip to Manila to pick one up.
20th-Sep-2006 09:57 am (UTC)

Well, I do have the tailor's contact details (and they said they shipped internationally), as well as a list of required measurements, which I really must email across to that Italian girl who asked about them...
20th-Sep-2006 11:10 am (UTC)
May I ask an indelicate question and enquire how much it cost you?
20th-Sep-2006 11:15 am (UTC)
Of course. Approx £130-140 for the jacket and trousers. Alternatively, a friend also found the following chap in Singapore doing off-the-shelf uniforms
20th-Sep-2006 11:17 am (UTC)
Damn. That was for just the jacket. However, click on the BSG category link on the left hand side and there's a full uniform (jacket and trousers) listed.
20th-Sep-2006 01:01 pm (UTC)
Yup, found it.
20th-Sep-2006 12:59 pm (UTC)
Thank you kindly.
