Well, that was a pleasant surprise. Ordered my upgrade Nokia N80 yesterday afternoon. The chap I spoke to said I'd have it by 5.30pm today. Didn't believe him. It arrived 6.15pm. Think I'll let them off. I'm in a good mood.
As for the N80, it's charging up right now and SIM's not registered yet but first impressions: Ooh, it's lovely... and now the love of my life, at least until my contract next expires... However, looks like Nokia's shifted memory card formats again, this time to Mini SD (just as well I had a spare 512Mb sitting in the Qtek) and the mains charger now has a smaller connector (but at least it came with an adapter so the older ones can be used with it).
Been looking forward to upgrading more or less as soon as I got to the Philippines. Turns out to be just as well I waited. Seems that my gert big roaming bills meant I got the minimum upgrade price of £50 (not that it really matters too much as apparently I can expense it - fringe benefit of working for a mobile consultancy...). Or so I thought. The invoice accompanying the phone says £0.00 on it. WTF?!?
Another interesting side-effect of the project - I was trying to figure out what to do with the £15 Amazon voucher I'd got for using my Amazon Mastercard when I got email notification of a second one! Something tells me I'd better get my expenses in pronto...
Anyway, yeah, nice to be back in London. Few shocks to the system, like re-discovering beer here costs a tad more than 50p a bottle. Also probably at risk of getting hit while crossing the road because I a) look the wrong way and b) I can just saunter across because I assume the drivers will slow down for me. Rather ironically, been working on a proposal which, if accepted, would send me back to the Philippines. Who says turkeys don't vote for Christmas? Main personal learning coming out of this: must avoid intercontinental assigments during May/July/August.
What better way to celebrate coming home than to go to Urban Assault on Sunday with jmswallow
? A fair turnout from Team Sheep. Amusingly, Dave's now sporting MARPAT too. It really has become closest thing there is to standard Team Sheep uniform. However, I decided I really had to give the ARVN Airborne camo an outing. Key learning - the boonie hat really needs a chin strap. Fun day, marred only by an ultra-blatant cheat dressed as the Punisher. Even that had its upside. By the end of the day, every time he appeared, everyone on our side would hose him down till you could barely see him for the cloud of pellets around him. Seemed to take the hint - got much better at acknowledging hits!
Went to fencing at Saxon last night. 6 weeks of minimal exercise while on expense account living. You do the math. Still, won 2/3 of my bouts, lost 2 to a chap who tended to beat me even before I went to Manila anyway. Guess it could have been worse. And I am now proud possessor of a Great British Beer Festival glass as a result of going to Saxon, thanks to Kate - at least there will be no unsightly gaps in my collection.
