A pleasantly unproductive day

Yellow Sign
Popped along to Borders - their 3 for 2 deals are dangerous, picked up Barbarossa by Alan Clark, Easter 1916 by Charles Townshend and Everything Bad Is Good For You by Steven Johnson, finally got round to starting Jade Empire on the Xbox and started planning PC upgrade specs and tasks (biggest issue is migrating 200Gb worth of data, mostly MP3s and China Beach episodes). Sigh. No fencing tomorrow :-(

Best thing I've bought for a while is a USB2 IDE/SATA combined external caddy (like this) -- as I've now got 3x300GB of TV stuff, it's easier to keep the three drives on a shelf and just plug them in as and when...

Yeah, I was pretty much headed in that direction but more to use them as a stepping stone to moving data from old to new RAID setup. Definitely like the spec of that unit though.

Ah, the mystery of RAID structures. I simply figured that there was no point in keeping the HDs spinning 24/7 when I barely need to use them. I swap the drives between my main machine (for DVD burning / watching) and the server (for making bits and bobs available to those who ask nicely ;)

As it is, I'm no longer convinced RAID-1's performance gain and convenience of a single volume are worth the hassles when installing XP or the panic if a drive starts to look iffy. However, the new motherboard I have my eye on supports RAID-5 ie striping and redundancy so that does look promising. Requires min of 3 drives though.

For me, it's not so much the video that's the problem - mostly what stauuf I do want to keep (not that much these days) gets archived off to DVD-R. It's the MP3s I want fast access to from around the house.

Suppose what I should do is reconfigure one of the boxes as, effectively, an audio server.

Jade Empire, huh? Listen out for Nathan Fillion as the voice of 'Gao the Lesser'...

Just checked the credits. Armin Shimerman is on there too. Cool!
