Fire select
Way overdue post on V For Vendetta, cut for spoilers:

Enjoyed this rather more than I expected. Pretty faithful to the comic to begin with too, albeit with the background updated (eg WMD terrorist attacks rather than near-miss Third World War being the trigger for the country's slide into totalitarianism). The part with Evey and Valerie's letter was pretty moving too.

The main thing I wasn't so keen on was the ending. Moore was pretty up front about showing the chaos that would ensue with the regime's collapse - rioting, factions jockeying for position to take over and so on. The film's ending was too neat and tidy, with the confrontation between the armed troops and the crowds being resolved completely peacefully and bloodlessly.

One really minor thing: I was wondering why the shots of the troops bothered me. Then I realised it was that the thought of British squaddies in urban camo just doesn't seem right ;-)

Anyway, interesting thing is Liz was impressed enough she wants to borrow my copies of the comic. That and Firefly, following on from my Farscape DVDs. I think I have gradually infected her with my geeky interests. Obviously not that completely as she asked for Firefly next rather than Galactica (think it was my comment that there weren't a lot of laughs to be had in BSG!).

After investigating some final options, eventually opted to bail on the Norfolkes banquet as I wasn't entirely sure about driving down to somewhere near Bristol and, more importantly, back again while tired and hung over with only the GPS unit for company (as most of the trip would have been on the M4, I wouldn't have got much conversation out of it anyway!) so I headed down to the Starfury pub meet instead and had a lot of fun there, especially discussing the usual stuff, including an awful lot of, yep, BSG...

One interesting thing: at one point I mentioned how a friend told me there'd been an oriental chap at the first SFX con in Blackpool and "everyone thought he was you, matey!" Jo then said she'd met him and that when she said hello, the first thing he said was "I'm not Ming!" Wow.

Still, thinking maybe I should have just driven on down to the banquet anyway...

Also started reinstating some previously retired icons, taking advantage of the slots thanks to LJ's new loyalty slots!

Heh. It is, isn't it? Stole it from one of the UK airsoft forums. Similarly, got this one from an airsofter friend.

Got around to seeing 'V' last night - Mandy loved it, but then she would as November 5th is her birthday - and I was pleased how close it flew to the original. One small thing that really creeped me out was how the production design kept using the same font in a lot of the text...the same font that TFL use on tube and bus signs. Somehow that little detail made it feel like it was 'closer' to the London that I live in.

Interesting... didn't notice that. I am *so* buying this on DVD!
