London hotel recommendations?
13th-Mar-2006 04:42 pm
A colleague is going to be flying in from the US in a week or so. Can anyone recommend any decent but reasonably priced hotels close-ish to Central London?

If you want basic and cheap how about Travelodge?

The one in Docklands is a stone's throw from the DLR East India station but charges the cheaper outer London Rate.

And if your colleague is using going to use the Buses/DLR/tube while here, tell them to get an PAYG Oyster. Though I object to having to conform to Ken's master plan ;-), you can't deny the savings. For example, Off Peak bus journeys are now £1.50 cash but only 80p with Oyster, so the savings soon add up!

On the Oyster front, check out this article from The Registeron the Met's use of Oyster data to track people's movements!

Yes, I read that on the BBC news feed the other day.

The reaction to it seems quite strong, considering all the other things that track what you get up to!

I don't know if she's still in business, but I highly recommend a bed and breakfast run by Mrs. Irene Forrest in Hampstead. Wonderful lady and a very comfortable, inexpensive place to stay. As her card says, "Quiet, convenient location, 4-5 minutes to tube and buses, 15 minutes by tube to the Theatres."

She's at 74 Lawn Road in Hampstead and her number is 0171 722 8589. About 5 or 6 years ago, her rates were $65 per night in U.S. dollars.

Last time I was in a central London hotel was the Radisson Edwardian Vanderbilt on Cromwell Road in South Ken. Nice in general though rooms weren't excessively spacious -- I'd certainly go back there. Can't have been too expensive as I was an impoverished student at the time!

More randomly, from what I've heard the Chelsea FC hotel (!) isn't bad and is pretty reasonably priced.
