Argh! I have no mobile service! Let the wailing and gnashing of teeth and rending of garments begin. Some time before 1.30pm, I ceased getting a network connection on Orange. Repeated restarts of the phone in different parts of the house have had no effect, neither has putting the SIM into other phones. Scanning manually for networks shows the usual gang of 4 or 5 suspects, depending on whether I'm using a UMTS or GSM phone but I can connect to Orange - "No access", it tells me.
Orange customer support have been as much use as a one-legged man at an arse kicking contest. There is apparently a UMTS transmitter fault in my area but she was at a loss to explain why I can't get GSM access either. So, my details have been passed on to technical support and they'll call me back on the landline, they say.
In the meantime, it's going to hard to continue running tests on a mobile application with no sodding mobile access. Bah. I guess I need to take a walk to the nearest Nat West to pay in my visa application fee so I'll see if coverage miraculously returns. In the meantime, if anyone has any ideas as to what's going on, you have my undivided attention...
OK, the US Embassy is also on my shit list. Their instructions may say I can pay the visa application fee at any bank but both Abbey and Nat West say "Oh no, you can't" and I've wasted so much time with them that it's too late to get to the nearest Barclays in Muswell Hill today. Bah.
OTOH, I popped into the High Street mobile phone store and a chap there did indeed have Orange connectivity. I've called up Orange to update them. I guess I give them till tomorrow morning then bollock them.
